Recognise AI. AI systems use patterns learned from examples to make predictions or generate outputs.
Understand generative AI. Generative AI produces new text, images, audio or code from learned patterns and your input.
Choose a suitable task. AI is useful for drafts, categorising and exploring options when a person can review the result.
Separate capabilities. Chat, web search, file access, memory and external actions are separate capabilities.

AI systems use patterns learned from examples to make predictions or generate outputs. Ordinary automation follows rules written by people. A timer switches a light on at six; an image classifier estimates whether a picture contains a cat. Neither system understands the world as a person does.
A useful first question is “How was this behaviour decided?” In a fixed receipt rule, a programmer states exactly when to send the email. In a learned spam filter, examples influence which messages receive a high spam score. Both can make mistakes, but the checks differ: inspect the receipt rule; test the classifier on representative messages. Some products combine rules and learned models, so the label on the box is less useful than understanding the task.
